JUNE 2025
Hello PB and friends of PB!
We’re making exciting strides in our mission to create a safer, more connected, and vibrant Pacific Beach, especially in these challenging times when community initiatives are more vital than ever. While the City is in a budget deficit, we are continuing forward with advocacy for safe travel and beautiful infrastructure through searches for grant funding, donations, and crowdfunding. Our focus remains squarely on our core mission: enhancing mobility, celebrating arts and culture, and fostering green spaces.
A key focus of our mobility efforts is advancing PB Pathways Phase 3. This initiative is all about implementing low-cost traffic calming measures in areas identified by you, our community, to make our streets safer for everyone. We’ve already had the Phase 3 plan approved by the Parking District in November, and are now seeking funding and community input on individual pieces. We are pursuing an agreement with the City to beautify the traffic circle at Foothill and Loring, enhancing this critical traffic investment with PB flair. We are confident that investments into good infrastructure are worthy of funds even in tighter financial conditions, and are working hard to find those sources.
As an example, last year beautifulPB was awarded a grant from the County of San Diego to improve our annual PB Counts. As part of an effort to improve our understanding of travel in PB and make data-driven recommendations, we have activated two traffic-counting cameras that tally modes of travel, while maintaining strict privacy for our community. You can read more about the system here. The cameras count traffic on Ocean Blvd (Shore Club), and PB Drive across from Kendall-Frost marsh, providing critical information about how pedestrians, vehicles, and bikes use the roads in these areas.
We have numerous exciting projects moving forward where art and mobility beautifully converge. For instance, consider our efforts in Alley Activation, transforming underutilized spaces into vibrant community assets. We’re also exploring community art installations like murals and art panels on trash cans and even “gamifying” mural maps to encourage exploration and slow travel.
We encourage you to get involved! Be sure to follow us on both instagram accounts to stay updated: @beautifulPacificBeach @PBArtDistrict
Travel actively and stay hydrated!

EVENT SPOTLIGHT: COMMUNITY CLIMATE CONVERSATIONS
The most meaningful change starts locally. Community Climate Conversations are your chance to learn, share, and co-create solutions that make our neighborhoods safer, healthier, and more climate-resilient. Come to the PB Library on June 23 from 5:00 to 7:30 for community, food, and music from local artists, and to learn more about some important local projects
Why join the conversation?
✔️ Learn about climate projects and ideas from local organizations
✔️ Share what matters most for your neighborhood’s resilience
✔️ Co-create local solutions with your community
This event is supported by Climate Action Campaign, Urban Collaborative Project, and Bayside Community Center, and focuses on building community-driven strategies that reflect local priorities. The idea you share will help County departments and beautifulPB plan future climate work, apply for funding, and amplify the region’s climate leadership.
🌱 Featuring PB Pathways Phase 3
Our community climate conversation will focus on the ReWild Mission Bay project and on PB Pathways Phase 3—our local effort to create safe, low-stress walking and biking routes across Pacific Beach. Will will be identifying specific locations and interventions for the next phase of our PB Pathways project.
📣 Your voice matters. Join the conversation and be part of the climate solutions shaping our region’s future.
PB PATHWAYS PHASE 3
PB Pathways are local active transportation routes designed to connect key destinations in Pacific Beach—schools, parks, beaches, and businesses—through safer, slower, and more people-friendly streets. The goal of the PB Pathways network is to make it easier and more enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities to get around without a car. Over the past decade, beautifulPB has worked to implement the initial phases of this project, and now we are moving on to Phase 3.

What’s New in PB Pathways Phase 3?
In 2024, we partnered with the public and local community organizations to gather input and adopt Phase 3 of the PB Pathways project. Phase 3 prioritizes improvements along additional roadways within the network, and identifies the types of changes the community would like to see along these routes. Recommendations in Phase 3 include:
- Identifying key beach access points and prioritizing improvements to address access concerns at these locations
- Improving branding and wayfinding along PB Pathways routes
- Addressing intersection and crossing safety at high-priority locations
- Adding traffic-calming features like painted curb extensions and mini traffic circles along specific segments of the network
You can view the full set of recommendations on our website here.

Want to Get Involved?
We are now working on implementing the recommendations adopted as part of PB Pathways Phase 3. To learn more or get involved with this project, visit www.beautifulPB.com or join us on June 23 for our Community Climate Conversations event at the PB Library.
FOOTHILL ROUNDABOUT UPDATE
The roundabout at the intersection of Foothill Blvd and Loring St has been in the works for over a decade, and thanks to the strong commitment of community members and our elected City representatives, the roundabout was finally completed this spring. While the community is already seeing the benefits of safer, calmer traffic due to the roundabout’s intentional design, the opportunity to beautify the space was missed. Unlike the neighborhoods of La Jolla and Bird Rock, which use local tax dollars to maintain landscaping in public spaces, Pacific Beach does not have a similar program to fund the maintenance of new green spaces. As a result, landscaping was not included during the development phase, and the center and extended sidewalks have since been filled with stamped, colored concrete.
Beautiful PB believes that this is not the final vision for the roundabout. With support from the Pacific Beach Planning Group and encouragement from the office of District 1 Councilmember Joe LaCava, we’re excited to begin the process of beautifying this space! Our vision is simple: to fill the center of the roundabout with beautiful, sustainable, and local materials—like rocks and community art—that will welcome everyone to Pacific Beach, whether they’re just passing through or returning home.

This project is about more than aesthetics—it’s about pride of place. A beautiful neighborhood reflects the care and creativity of the people who live there. At Beautiful PB, we believe that public spaces should inspire joy, reflect local values, and foster connection. Together, we can shape a more vibrant, welcoming, and sustainable Pacific Beach. This is just the beginning—there’s so much more to come, and we can’t wait to share it with you!
